Cracks in the Foundation

words from shelby hergenrather –

“She was naive then and fears she still is.”

The crack in the foundation is evident. Light seeps through it, piercing the darkness that consumes her mind. Sirens echo, and hospital monitors join the harmony of her nightmares. She startles awake, relieved that the emergency is merely a product of a traumatized subconscious.

She lingers between wakefulness and sleep, reminiscing on the years before. Winds of peace, the breeze of simplicity, and waves of ease once graced her life. But now, they are broken by the curse of humanity; evil lurks in the corners of her nostalgia.

In the wings, the house falls. The words slur. The screaming never ceases. And the innocence?
Stolen.

She was naive then and fears she still is.

Everything feels cloudy and unclear. The lens won’t refocus to reveal a sharper image of security. She lies in limbo, hovering between safe and unsafe, perpetually on high alert to hurry up and wait. She gives up on the hope of peace and resigns herself to sleep without choice.

She wakes to a cry, and the clock reads seven, as always. Frustrated by mornings that force themselves upon her, she dreads what today could possibly entail. Yet, with a resolute smile, she marches head-on into the organized chaos of her life and sings, “Good morning!”
